In class the previous day: TSW watch sketchcast over defining integers, rational and irrational numbers and write the definitions down in their spiral notebook. Then the students will visit www.mathisfun.com to learn more about those numbers. I will walk around the room and answer questions as they arise. As a fun end of mini lesson activity, I will create QR codes with different questions about these words. The students will break up into groups and compete against each other by answering the QR codes.
At home: TSW watch the screencast over real numbers and follow instructions in the screencast.
In class (following day): Based upon answers posted to Sophie, this will lead the class discussion. Questions will be answered and the students will break up into groups to complete the Zooburst activity. I will walk them through the basics of Zooburst and a discussion over age appropriate vocabulary will take place. The groups will plan their popup books through discussion and brainstorming of ideas. I will walk around the class and facilitate thinking through questions. When the group feels they are ready, they will create their popup book.
How will your assess their Learning? TSW complete a zooburst popup book that explains real numbers to kindergarteners. After they finish the book, they will discuss in their groups why they think it is important to learn about real numbers. Click here to view rubric.
